What is tenkara, and how is it different from regular fly fishing?

Tenkara is a Japanese style of fly fishing with no reel — just a telescoping rod, a fixed line, and a fly. It's the simplest real way to fly fish, which is why it works so well for kids, camps, and anyone who's been intimidated by the usual gear pile.

Do I need a reel?

No!  Tenkara style fly fishing is done without a reel, simply point the rod tip back until you can grab the line with your hand and pull the fish in with your hands.    

Is this real fly fishing or a toy?

What is real these days?  Joking aside, if you consider catching a fish on a fly to be 'real' then yes, this is most definitely real. 

What length rod should I get for [small creek / open river / pond]?

We recommend our Kids rod for small creeks, rivers and ponds where you don't need to cast more than 20'.  Otherwise, go with the Big Kids rod. 

How big a fish can I land on this?

Thus far, a 4 lb pink salmon is the largest fish we've heard of being landed on these rods.   That said, with the right amount of finesse, patience and agility, you can go much, much bigger, but these rods can lift 3 lbs or 1.5 kg out of the water. 

Can I use it for bluegill, bass, panfish — or is it trout only?

We highly encourage catching as many species as possible on our rods.   Bluegill might be the best sportfish in the world, but all species are fair game.

What line do I need, and is it included?

Each rod comes ready to fish with 5x tippet and recycled fly line.  If you'd like extra long line or more 5x tippet, we are happy to sell you some, otherwise you can use your own fishing line or tippet from your local fly shop. 

What happens when I break the tip? Can I buy replacements?

It's rough out there! We can sell you a replacement tip, just use the Contact page and note which section(s) needs replacement. 

Is this good for a beginner adult, or is it a kids' thing?

These rods are good for beginner adults, kids, expert adults, expert kids, grandparents....you get the picture. 

How young can a kid start?

As soon as they can hold a rod.  Our kids started fishing when they were 3, catching at 5.  

Does it fit in a backpack?

Yes.  It also fits in a glove box, purse, back pocket, fanny pack or strapped to the top tube of a bicycle.  

Why is this cheaper than everything else — what's the catch?

We've owned tenkara rods from multiple brands and fully appreciate quality craftsmanship, but have sought to provide the essence of what is needed in a tenkara rod that is ready to fish.  No frills, just function.  Our goal is to make fly fishing accessible to everyone, so we keep the price point as reasonable as possible.

Can I use this at a camp / with a group?

Definitely.  We started using these at a summer camp in Colorado and realized that they were fish catching machines after having multiple children catch their first fish on our rods.
